Thanks to everyone for their nominations for NYC Gifted and Talented Blog Reader’s Choice for G&T Teacher of year. Most of the people who nominated a teacher didn’t give much explanation of why that teacher should receive this award so it was difficult to tell the full impact the teacher with those particular nominations. Also, several parents voiced their complaints about their particular G&T teachers (many from NEST) which really wasn’t the purpose of the nominations.
After much deliberation with myself, I’m pleased to announce that Ms. Dana Kaplan from P.S. 33 Chelsea Prep has been selected by the readers of this blog as the NYC Gifted and Talented Blog Reader’s Choice for G&T teacher of year!
This submission is from another parent from P.S. 33 (who wishes to remain anonymous). After reading this nomination the selection process was quite easy. As most of you know, my child attends PS 33 so I am a little biased but did try my best to remain fair. Here’s the nomination for the Reader’s Choice G&T Teacher of Year:
Last spring we decided to select P.S. 33 Chelsea Prep’s G&T program even though there was no proven track record because the gifted and talented program was new. After speaking to the principal and touring P.S. 33 we felt good about our decision when we selected P.S. 33. We weren’t sure what to expect when school started but immediately we noticed the positive impact Miss Kaplan was having on our child. Our child’s reading skills dramatically improved in a few short weeks but better than that our child jumped out of bed every morning and couldn’t wait to go to school. Even on weekends, our child would ask to go to school that day! Miss Kaplan has instilled the foundations of learning on all levels – from the academic side to experiential learning she has done by using New York City for all the many field trips that incorporated lessons from the classroom. Miss Kaplan was always approachable and very responsive to our (many) questions. We always felt our child was in a safe and nurturing environment with Miss Kaplan. She always customized the homework around our child’s own ability and made sure there was mastery of the reading level before moving our child forward. Even though we didn’t know what to expect when we started school last year we are both extremely pleased with the inaugural G&T class at P.S. 33 Chelsea Prep led by Miss Dana Kaplan. She’s been an inspiration not only to our child but to all the children in the classroom and school. Miss Kaplan’s impact will not only be felt during this past year but beyond since she has established the foundation of academic excellence and learning to last throughout a lifetime. We want to thank both Miss Kaplan and Principal Lindy for creating such a wonderful education experience for our child. We’d like to nominate Miss Dana Kaplan as the G&T Teacher of Year.
Congratulation to Ms. Dana Kaplan as the first recipient of the NYC Gifted and Talented Blog Reader’s Choice Award for G&T Teacher of the Year! I’ll be presenting Ms. Dana with a plaque when the new school year begins in September.
P.S. – there will be a fireworks display tonight on the Hudson River at 9pm to celebrate! 🙂
