Congratulations to all the parents of those children who qualified for the NYC gifted and talented program for this coming school year!  The number of gifted children is way up this year, and the incoming wave of applicants is about to crash down onto the NYC G&T system.
The Wall Street Journal published a story this past Friday reporting a 13% spike in incoming kindergartners taking the OLSAT test this year, as well as a 13% increase in the number of kids who ranked in the 90th percentile or above for the OLSAT and Bracken test scores combined and were accepted in the gifted and talented program.
Emily Glickman, president of Abacus Guide Education Consulting blames the “test-prep effect” for the surge in qualified gifted and talented kids.  But do these statistics really suggest that making sure our kids are ready for their OLSAT test, Bracken, and WPSII test actually making it harder for everyone to get into the NYC gifted and talented schools, including us?
Of course parents want to prepare their child for their education.  What these OLSAT test resultss mean to me is that I have to work even harder to make sure that my child can do her best and succeed in such an increasingly competitive environment. Afterall, this is New York City! The city I hate to love and love to hate (at times!).
