Well, it’s been over 100 days since our daughter started the gifted and talented program at P.S. 33 Chelsea Prep for kindergarten.  I thought it would be beneficial to reflect back on the past 100 days and attempt to give an unbiased recollection of the experience thus far.  I stress the word ‘attempt’ since this is about my daughter.

Overall, the experience has been wonderful for our daughter and the feedback I’ve received from other parents of children in the class has been overwhelmingly positive. Of course, with any new program it took a few weeks to get into the groove to make sure everything ran smoothly but all the kinks were worked out in no time. There is a good diversity of children in the classroom that truly reflects the many cultures and backgrounds of NYC. The children all seem to be well behaved for the most part – at least when I’m picking up or dropping off our daughter. Continue reading



OLSAT Testing Notifications Sent to Parents for NYC Gifted and Talented

Below is a notice from the DOE that just got released for non-public school students:

G&T testing appointment letters will be mailed later this week to all non-public school students who submitted a Request for Test (RFT) form by the November 6 deadline. If you applied online, you also will receive an e-mail message. The letter will contain your child’s assigned date, time and location for taking the OLSAT and BSRA tests.

Public School Students
Your child’s elementary school will provide information about your child’s assigned date, time and location for taking the OLSAT and BSRA tests. For more information about G&T admissions, visit our website. If you have questions, call (212) 374-4948 or e-mail ES_Enrollment@schools.nyc.gov.

New York Times Article on OLSAT Test Prep for pre-k 3 and 4 year olds

The recent NY Times article about test prepping for the OLSAT and ERB test has many parents up in arms over test prepping at the ages of 3 and 4 while other parents are embracing the idea to get the “edge” they think their child needs to do well on the OLSAT and ERB tests. Competition is not only fierce among parents but among tutoring and test-prep companies popping up all over Manhattan. In the NY Times article the director from Dalton School on the UES indicates it’s “unethical” to test prep students for admissions into kindergarten. I suppose that’s easy to say if you don’t have a child going into kindergarten or if you can afford the $30K+ per year tuition. Or maybe you’re content with the status-quo at general education programs at both private and public schools that teach to the middle or low-end of the class.
