New York City Continues to Struggle with Gifted and Talented Program Criteria

In 2006, NYC’s gifted and talented program admissions criteria and testing methods were standardized in order to simplify the testing process city-wide. While this program change seemed to make good administrative sense at the time, in the years that have followed, many questions have arisen regarding the admissions criteria for the NYC city-wide gifted and talented program.

In 2008, the admittance of NYC children in poorer school districts and primarily minor school systems in the city were significantly lower than in other parts of the city’s gifted and talented program. Many schools had some students qualify, but not enough to support a full NYC gifted and talented program.

In 2010, admittance rates in many of these poorer and minority school districts dropped even further, with several schools seeing no students make it into the score range necessary for admittance to the New York City G&T program. As a result, the New York City gifted and talented department of education has decided to review testing procedures and to search for new ones that will level the playing field for students throughout the city.

What is the Wechsler Test?

The WPPSI or Wechsler Test is a standardized IQ assessment test that is used to measure the intelligence quotient of preschool aged children. Unlike many standardized tests for older students which are commonly administered in large groups in a classroom-like setting, the Wechsler test is usually given one-on-one. This methodology is used in order to ensure the young children who are more easily distracted are actually completing the test in its entirety and achieving the best and most accurate scores possible.

The WPPSI test, which actually stands for the Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence Test, is a very visual IQ test, utilizing many pictures in its format in order to make it appropriate for children who are, as of yet, unable to read.

You may be asking yourself, what is the OLSAT test? Standardized assessment tests like the OLSAT, which is a rational and abstract thinking skills test used with K-12 students, can be intimidating. After all, these tests have greater implications for students and may result in being accelerated in their students, being held back a year in school, being placed in remedial courses, or finding their way into gifted and talented programs.

Helping your child perform well on the OLSAT is easier today than it may have once been. There are OLSAT sample tests available for purchase online. There are also sample exams available free of charge on the internet as well.

Students who have the change to take practice OLSAT exams or complete sample sections of an OLSAT test before the official testing day at school have a tendency to perform better on the formal OLSAT exam.

As more parents become concerned with the standard education made available to their children in public school systems, the business of preparing students for NYC gifted and talented program admission testing has become a big venture.

Parents who cannot afford private school educations for their children have increasingly turned to private companies that offer gifted and talented program test preparation classes and sessions for children as young as four or five. Although these G&T program testing prep courses cost around $150 or more, many parents are willing to pay the bill if it means their children will have access to better education within the public school system, which is something that the NYC gifted and talented program offers.

WISC Test for Gifted Admissions

The Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children, or WISC IV Test, is a common assessment exam used in the admissions process of many gifted and talented schools and programs throughout the United States. In some cases, the WISC Test is used in combination with other IQ and abilities assessment exams, though in some instances, the WISC is the only standardized test employed for measuring gifted status in terms of IQ and abilities ranking.

When the Wechsler Test is the only exam, often other criteria also apply, including teacher feedback, transcripts, and a portfolio of work. That portfolio may include school assignments, written reports, and any other pertinent information to determining a child’s skills, abilities, and intelligence level in general.

Minorities Under-represented in New York City’s Gifted and Talented Programs

New York City, which often leads the field in gifted and talented programs for children, is seeking new testing criteria for the city’s youth. What has spurred this search? Most recently, the traditional gifted and talented tests used have come under criticism as a result of low qualification numbers for students in minority groups. In fact, there are several schools in some of the burrows which will have no gifted and talented program due to no students qualifying for the program in the fall of 2010.

Proponents of new NYC gifted and talented criteria believe the traditional testing practices do not accurately measure the potential of students in many minority groups. Essentially, the city and the NYC school districts are taking measure of NYC district-wide gifted and talented program admissions criteria and will potentially make adjustments to ensure that more students city-wide make it into gifted and talented programs in the future.

Stanford Binet Test Results Lower in Children Exposed to Lead

The affects of lead exposure on children has long been a health concern among parents. For a long time, certain levels of lead exposure were considered acceptable, with scientists believing that these low levels posed no serious threat; however, in 2001, a study of children who scored low on the Stanford Binet IQ test showed a correlation between intelligence and lead exposure.

Thanks in part to this study, we now know that children who are exposed to lead, even in very small quantities can have detrimental side effects arise for the rest of their lives. The study showed that even small amounts of lead in the blood stream of a child could potentially impact their intelligence level and ability to learn, as a result.

Unfortunately, this has implications for children in low income areas where lead based house paints may still be present on interior walls of homes and apartments.

The OLSAT test, or Otis-Lennon School Ability Test, is a standardized test that is utilized in measuring abstract thinking and rational thinking or reasoning skills in elementary, junior high and high school age children. The OLSAT is administered in small groups for Pre-K, kindergarten, 1st grade, and 2nd grade in pencil and paper method by a trained test proctor.

The test is broken down in five main sections covering verbal comprehension and reasoning, pictorial reasoning, quantitative reasoning, and figural reasoning. Each section of the test includes verbal and non-verbal abilities.

The OLSAT exam format is multiple choice and includes sections on verbal, quantitative and spatial reasoning. It additionally yields test results or scores in a total performance on the exam, as well as section-based scores in both verbal and non-verbal reasoning.
